University of Lagos, UNILAG, is one of the prestigious first five generation universities in Nigeria.

It was founded in 1962 and has been one of the best universities in the country ever since. It is a public research university. It is known as “the University of First Choice” and “the Nation’s Pride”.  

UNILAG is in the busiest state in Africa, Lagos (the land of opportunities eh). A great university of study in a great city. 

UNILAG has three campuses – all on the mainland. They are:

  • Akoka campus
  • Former School of Radiography
  • College of Medicine

Akoka campus – the main campus and the recently formed campus at the former School of Radiography are both located at Yaba. All the courses are studied there except the ones studied at the College of Medicine in Surulere. College of Medicine, UNILAG is affiliated with the Lagos Teaching Hospital. 

The university offers a lot of A-list courses such as Medicine and Surgery, Law, Pharmacology, Mass Communication, etc.

Arrangement of UNILAG School Fees Schedule 

UNILAG has many faculties and a college. But, the school fees schedule is based on science and languages, and non-science courses. So, I’m going to arrange them thus. 

UNILAG School Fees for 2021/2022

UNILAG hasn’t released the school fees schedule for the 2021/2022 session. So, I’m going to give us the 2019/2020 session schedule so that we can know what the school fees schedule is like and what to expect. You can make preparations and estimations based on this schedule. 

Apart from all other dues and fees, as a fresher, you’ll have to pay a special fee first. This fee is called the acceptance fee. 

UNILAG Acceptance school Fees

As a fresher, the first fee you pay after you’ve been offered admission is acceptance. 

After accepting your admission on JAMB CAPS, the next thing to do is to pay your acceptance fee. 

An acceptance fee is a fee you pay as a newly admitted student to indicate that you’ve truly accepted the admission offered and are ready to start processing your registration. 

The university UNILAG Acceptance fee for undergraduates is Twenty thousand naira (N20,000)

The acceptance fee for postgraduate new students is also N20,000.

How to Pay UNILAG Acceptance School Fees

Now, I’m going to tell you how to go about paying the acceptance fee for UNILAG new students. 

You can make your payment online or through commercial banks. 

When you’ve accepted your admission and they start paying for acceptance fee, this is what you should do;

  • Go to http://studentportal.unilag.edu.ng
  • Click on Matric/Application No. 
  • Fill it with your application number.  
  • Click Password and fill in your password (your surname in small letters is the default password). 
  • Click on Login. 
  • Your student account page will open. 
  • On your dashboard, click on Pay Online. 
  • Fill in the appropriate details. 
  • Click on Select Payment. 
  • You’ll see options for Acceptance Fee and Tuition Fee (School Fees).  
  • Chose Acceptance Fee. 
  • But if you want to pay for both Acceptance Fee and School Fees, click Acceptance Fee and Tuition Fee. 
  • You’ll see an option to pay through Transgate where you can use ATM cards (Verve, Master Card, Visa, Interswitch, click on it. 
  • Fill in the appropriate details. 
  • You’ll be charged 500 Naira from your bank account for using this. 
  • Make sure the details are correct. 
  • Click Submit. 
  • You’ll get an SMS confirmation of your payment. 
  •  After that, you’d get a receipt in your dashboard which you can click to view. 
  • Download the receipt. 
  • Print out the receipt for verification on your registration. 

If you want to pay the UNILAG school fees through the bank, you’ll have to pay in any of the commercial banks within the UNILAG premises. The banks are the only accepted banks to pay any UNILAG fee. 

The commercial banks to make the payment are :

  • Ecobank
  • Guarantee Trust Bank (GTB) 
  • United Bank for Africa (UBA) 
  • Wema Bank
  • First Bank
  • Zenith Bank 
  • Access Bank

These banks are on the school premises and the only banks acceptable for payment. 

You’ll be charged Two hundred and Fifty Naira (N250) as opposed to the Five hundred Naira (N500) on online payment. But, we all know that bank matters are stressful and time-consuming especially since the bank payment is limited to only the commercial banks within the school premises. This is why people prefer to use online payment with their ATM cards. 

Remember, you must pay your acceptance fee before any other thing. Very important! 

UNILAG Undergraduate School Fees 

Here, I’m going to outline UNILAG undergraduate school fees schedule for us. 

As expected, the school fees schedule for new students is different from that of the old students. 

As I said before, the tuition is structured based on science and language, and non-science courses and it includes the UNiLAG school fees of medicine and surgery.

How to Pay UNILAG School Fees Online

You can also pay online or through commercial banks in the school premises. 

To pay online ;

  • Go to http://studentportal.unilag.edu.ng
  • Click on Matric/Application No. 
  • Fill it with your Matric number.  
  • Click Password and fill in your password (your surname in small letters is the default password). 
  • Click on Login. 
  • Your student account page will open. 
  • On your dashboard, click on Pay Online. 
  • Fill in the appropriate details. 
  • Click on Select Payment. 
  • You’ll see options for Acceptance Fee and Tuition Fee (School Fees).  
  • Chose Tuition Fee 
  • But if you want to pay for both Acceptance Fee and School Fees, click Acceptance Fee and Tuition Fee. 
  • You’ll see an option to pay the UNILAG school fees hrough Transgate where you can use ATM cards (Verve, Master Card, Visa, Interswitch, click on it.

Accommodation in UNILAG 

In preparing for school, one of the most important things is accommodation. 

You will have to sort out your accommodation once you’ve been offered admission and you’ve accepted it. 

There are two options for accommodation in UNILAG after paying school fees. You can choose to stay in the school halls (hostels) or get accommodation off-campus. 

However, new students are advised to stay in the school hostels for at least the first year. This is to enable them settle into school and academics easily. They can then look for off-campus accommodations for their second year or the rest of their stay in the school. 

UNILAG Hostels

UNILAG has fifteen (15) hostels. Six (6) are male hostels and seven are female hostels. The remaining two (2) are mixed hostels – for both males and females. 

Male Hostels :

  2. Eni Njoku Hall
  3. Mariere Hall
  4. Saburi Biobaku Hall
  5. Sodeinde Hall
  6. The old El Kanemi Hall

Female Hostels :

  1. Queen Moremi Hall

  4. Kofo Ademola Hall (A.K.A Madam Kofo Hall) 
  5. Madam Tinubu Hall (A.K.A MTH) 
  6. Fagunwa Hall

The Mixed Hostels :

  1. Henry Carr Hall
  2. Erastus Akingbola Hall

A lot to choose from, huh? But, you’ll have to apply for a room early, make sure you’re on time for the balloting to be allocated a room of your choice in a hostel of your choice. You must also pay for your room on time, else they will allocate the room to someone else. 

How to Apply/Ballot For UNILAG Hostel 

The school usually releases dates for the balloting of hostel rooms. So, you’ll have to keep an eye out for the date. 

Make sure you’re on time for the balloting to apply for hostel space. This is because it follows the rule of “first come first serve”. So, make sure you are able to apply for a room on the first day of balloting. 

Note that only registered students of UNILAG can apply for hostel space. 

To apply/ballot for a room, the following are the steps to take ;

  • Go to http://studentportal.unilag.edu.ng
  • Fill in the appropriate details. 
  • Click Login 
  • On your student account, scroll down till you see Accommodation. 
  • Click on it. 
  • Select the hostel of your choice. 
  • Click on Hostel Reservation 
  • Confirm your Hostel Reservation 
  • Download Hostel Reservation Slip

Remember, only registered UNILAG students can apply for hostel rooms. 

Now, I will talk about UNILAG hostel fees. 

UNILAG Hostel Fees

How much is the UNILAG hostel fee? 

UNILAG hostel fee is Twenty-five thousand Naira (N25,000) for all hostels except Sodeinde Hall which is about Sixty-five thousand Naira (N65,000) to Eighty-five thousand Naira (N85,000). 

How to pay UNILAG hostel fee? 

You can pay online using the student portal or pay through any of the commercial banks within the school premises. 

To pay online ;

To pay through bank, you’ll have to go to any of the commercial banks within the school premises. 

This fee is paid per session. 

Remember, you must pay within three (3) days of getting a room else, they’ll allocate it to another person. 

Off-Campus Accommodation 

You can get accommodation outside the school if you don’t want to live in the hostels. 

You can rent a single-room apartment or a self-contained apartment. 

The cost of accommodation off-campus depends on the distance of the house from UNILAG. 

For a single-room apartment, the cost is between Thirty thousand Naira (N30,000) to Forty-five thousand Naira (N45,000) per year. 

For a self-contained apartment, the cost is between Eighty thousand Naira (N80,000) to One hundred and Fifty thousand Naira (N150,000) per year. 

You can see that the cost of staying in a school hostel is comparably cheaper than staying off-campus. 

The options are open to you anyway. Choose according to your preference and pocket.
